How Pakistani Government Policy to Enable Car Manufacturing in Pakistan can Bring Jobs and Thrive the Economy

  • Policies like Greenfield and Brownfield can help encourage new startups and international companies invest in Pakistan
  • Government needs to allocate startup funds for around 100 Million USD for new startups trying to innovate new fuel technologies such as hydrogen and water based fuel cells
  • Universities should start startup incubation centres to allow more students to fail which helps them to learn while also maintaining home expenses

Introduction: Understanding the Impact of Government Policy on Car Manufacturing in Pakistan

In yesteryears of Pakistan we had many brands like Mitsubishi, Honda, Suzuki, Toyota and even Kia / hyundai in Pakistan but as the only three cartel remained in Pakistan which was essentially just importing car parts and assembling Pakistan. There was a company called Adam which started to come in Pakistan and manufacture as well but it was not well funded and had to eventually shut down.

The lesson here is to learn that a solid policy is needed where foreign manufacturers have to pay more tax to sell their vehicles compare to local startups will be the only only way. We should not be looking for more examples other than the fan industry, we had and still have Pak fans, millat fans but they were never given the mandate that they can expand into other verticals and taxation discounts for enabling manufacturing within Pakistan. Think about it if Tata can have the nano why not Millat have their own car if they can manufacture a tractor why not a car?

The Potential of Startup Ecosystem in the Auto Industry: Opportunities and Challenges

We should not look anywhere else but our neighbour India which was very poor till 1991 and in 1991 after opening up its borders (which we did by the way in in 1960's and closed again in the 1970's), they flourished. Look at Ola and Tata and Waymo. These indian automobile companies have given a big kick to Ford, Toyota and Honda and sell more than these .
Over 1.5 trillion USD has been generated in the economy since 20 years due to the government of india focusing on "Made in india" startups a 20% cut in federal taxes for 10 years.
